The Others

Physical Impairment Experience

A physical impairment is a disabling condition that requires adaptation. People often use assertive devices or mobility aids such as crutches, canes, wheelchairs and artificial limbs to obtain mobility. Whilst starting our new project, called 'The Others' we have been looking at how everyone is different in there own way. So by looking at how people cope with their disabilities, this relates to the project.

We were supplied with wheelchairs, headphones and goggles which you could not see through properly. I volunteered to wear the goggles for the day, so i could experience what it is like to be physically impaired. I had an enabler with me for the whole day, who was there to support and guide me when i needed help. I found it hard not being able to see as it disorientated me, but made me realise how fortunate i am. Due to the fact i could not see, i had to use my other senses to help me throughout the day, such as my hearing and feeling for things. This experience definitely opened my eyes and made me think about how other people make suitable adaptations to help them in life.
