The Collective

Plymouth Library

Today we were set a little project where we had to capture the essence of Plymouth Central Library. The library had asked Plymouth College Of Art, if all of the first year students from all courses would come and be creative in their own way. The library has been on the current site since 1910, with an extensive post-war modification in 1956. However after many years, it is now being relocated to Mayflower Street in Plymouth. The idea of taking images in the library is so that people in 2115 looking at my images will have an idea of what a public library looked like and how it has changed. Studying photography, I captured parts of the library, which interested me, and what I thought would make an exciting image. Having had a tour of the library, I really enjoyed looking at the ancient books, which were mainly stored in the basement. I thought the texture of the aged covers made the photos more interesting; some even had tasselled bookmarks, which added extra colours to the shots.

I like the contrast between the dark red tones of the book against the cream book covers. I enjoyed capturing images of the older books because i liked the way some of the corner covers were slightly ripped and that the colours had started to run. I liked the way it looked in my photographs. I was capturing images of books from almost 200 years ago, in the present time.
