My Visual Diary-Week 2

History Of Music Photography

Today in our lecture we looked into the history of music photography, where we started looking at work from the 1940's to the 1990's. We looked at several different photographers, such as Herman Leonard, Jim Marshall, Annie Leibovitz, Anton Corbijn, Laura Levine, David La Chapelle, Mick Hutson and Tom Oldham. Having looked at each photographer and learnt abit about style, one photographer that caught my eye was Laura Levine. Laura Levine's work caught my eye as she uses such good lighting within her shots. I also like the way she focuses primarily on the model, instead of having an intriguing background aswell. As i think this would take the attention away from the main focus.

For me this photo of Michael Hutchence really stands out and catches my attention. This is because there is a strong contrast between the white background and Hutchence's dark jacket. I like the way Laura Levine choose to shoot against a white background as it means all attention is based around the model. After researching into Laura Levine's work and looking at her style i then went out and shot in the style of Laura Levine.

Overall, i was pleased with this shot. I thought the denim jacket worked really well against the white background and just like Laura Levine's photo above, my model looks like she is having fun. I added a border to my image, as i felt it would make the photograph give an old vibe, making it similar to Levine's work. Having not used photoshop huge amounts before, it was good being able to experiment with different tools and work out how to add this border to my work.
